The Nuremberg Hospital is one of the largest municipal hospitals in Europe.

While over many years the number of patients and employees remained the same, the number of persons treated on an inpatient basis has increased since 1995 from 62,000 to presently 83,000. During the same period the average length of stay dropped from 12 to presently 9,3 days.

The hospital is structured in 38 clinics and institutes. Approximately 400 apprentices attend the Training Centre of Nursing. As of 19th January, 2006, three additional General Hospitals in the surrounding area were annexed to the Nuremberg Clinic.

As hospital with a maximum of performance level comprising all the necessary specialities, the Nuremberg Hospital uses its know-how to set up a network for predominantly occurring disease patterns. Starting from the idea of holistic treatment of patients, in these competence centres it is not the patient asked to be mobile but rather the doctors from the different specialized clinics come to the patient. The declared objective is to optimize early diagnosis, treatment and aftercare and to build up close cooperation between the inpatient and outpatient domain.
